Serhan O. Isikman received his BS (2006) and MS (2008) degrees in Electrical Engineering from Koc University, a top ranking private research university in Istanbul, Turkey (M.S. advisor: Prof. Hakan Urey, director of Optical Microsystems Lab.). He is now a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), working with Assoc. Prof. Aydogan Ozcan in UCLA Biophotonics Lab. He has specialized in optics and micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems, particularly in lensfree on-chip microscopy and tomography, on-chip bio-sensing, miniaturized optical display and imaging systems, and electromagnetic actuators for optical micro-systems.
His research in biomedical optics and optical micro-systems (MOEMS) has led to 3 US and international patents (two of which are licensed to Microvision Inc., WA, USA), 21 peer-reviewed journal papers, and more than 25 international conference papers. Serhan Isikman has also written 2 book chapters on on-chip imaging for point-of-care diagnostics and pathology applications.
He has served as an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous scientific journals including Optics Express (OSA), Lab Chip (RSC) and Polymer Chemistry (RSC).
Serhan Isikman has been awarded a departmental fellowship by UCLA for two consecutive years for his PhD studies. His MS degree work was funded by Microvision Inc., WA, USA and Turkish National Science Foundation. In 2008, he received Microvision Inc. Award for outstanding technical contributions to the company. He is also awarded a student travel grant by the Chemical and Biological Microsystems Society to attend the 2011 Micro-TAS conference.
Between 2008-2009, he worked as an engineering consultant for Microvision Inc., USA for the development of miniaturized projection-display (pico-projector) and barcode reader systems. He has also worked as a summer intern in Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems, Germany (2005) and in the R&D Dept. of FIAT Automobile Factories, Turkey (2004).
He worked for four semesters as a teaching assistant for the Circuits and Systems and Introduction to Optics courses at Koc University (2006-2008).
Serhan O. Isikman is married to Elif Sicim Isikman, who is currently pursuing her PhD degree in marketing at Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California (USC).
